ICD-10 Tools

Here you will find various documents and links to help you understand ICD-10 diagnostic coding, which came into effect October 1, 2015. If you file insurance claims after that date, you MUST use ICD-10 codes and not the ICD-9 codes that have been in use for almost 40 years.

1. Complete ICD-9 and ICD-10 mental health code lists

  • ICD-9 Code List
  • ICD-10 Code List

Use these files to look up the description of an ICD-9 code (left), then search for a similar description in the ICD-10 code list (right). Please take note of the column in the ICD-10 code list with ones and zeros: a "1" indicates that the adjacent code is a valid diagnostic code. But a "0" means that the adjacent code is a "header" code that is NOT a valid diagnostic code and is included only for clarification purposes. Claims that use header codes as diagnoses will be rejected.
